Apple Meets With DoCoMo, Softbank On Launching iPhone in Japan

After signing deals with U.S. and European operators to sell its iPhone earlier this year, Apple Inc. now is making plans to enter Japan, one of the biggest and most sophisticated mobile-phone markets in the world.
People familiar with the situation say Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs recently met with NTT DoCoMo's president, Masao Nakamura, to discuss a deal to offer its iPhone in Japan through Japan's dominant mobile operator. These people said Apple has also been talking to No. 3 operator Softbank Corp. and executives from both companies have made multiple trips to its Cupertino, Calif. headquarters.
今年始めにアメリカとヨーロッパとの携帯電話会社とのiPhone販売の契約を進めてきたアップル社が、世界でも最大規模かつ技術的に進んでいる日本の携帯電話市場に参入する計画をたてている。
関係者によると、アップル社のチーフエグゼクティヴであるスティーブ・ジョブス氏が、日本で最有力な携帯電話会社であるNTTドコモの社長中村維夫（なかむらまさお）氏とiPod提供について議論する為に会ったと話している。一方で、アップル社は第3位のソフトバンク社とも話しをしているとも同関係者は伝えており、ドコモ、ソフトバンクの幹部社員が数度にわたってカリフォルニア州クパチーノにあるアップル本社を訪れている模様だ。
ウォールストリートジャーナルの記事なんですがね。どうやらiPhoneの販売はドコモかソフトバンクの2社に絞られているようですな。周知のとおり、日本のケータイ会社は端末の値段をあげて、その代わりに通話料金を下げる戦略に転換しており、iPhoneのように人気の高い端末を取り込めるかどうかはこれからのシェアを決定する重要なファクターになるわけで必死だよね。
ちなみに、海外では既にiPhone2の販売が噂されているそう。
